Beazley Design of the Year

When I think of good design, the first thing that comes to mind is a practical object that can be used to improve the way we do things, in a simple way. However, this is only one aspect of design. This exhibition proved that design does not have to be a physical product, it can be a concept with a variety of purposes. It can be a form of provoking thoughts and emotions, a form of reclaim or even a form of art.

Beazley designs of the year include the most innovative designs in six different areas: digital, product, fashion, transport, graphics and architecture. These designs have been selected by both the public and design experts for being the most innovative products/concepts. In this post, I will review the exhibition and discuss which of these is, in my opinion, the best design.

The exhibition was composed of different sections. As a product design engineering student, graphics and architecture were the two fields which I had less knowledge about and therefore, was not able to fully appreciate the concepts that were presented.

There was a great variety of designs with different purposes. Some focused on looking for solutions, helping people and the environment, whilst others were designed to entertain. Some examples of this were CATCH, a simple HIV test specifically designed for people in emerging nations, and the Xperia Touch, a portable and interactive projector.

Out of all the concepts, ThisAbles, was the one which I found most interesting. It is a series of 3D printed products which aim at making IKEA’s bestselling items accessible to people with different disabilities. The project was developed by IKEA and two NGOs; Milbar and Access Israel.

There are 13 different products which solve different accessibility issues, such as opening closets, turning on lamps, or even getting up from a couch. What I really find fascinating is that these products are add-ons, making already existing products more accessible. There is no need to buy special furniture and replace it. The products tackle the different issues in a simple and effective manner. Furthermore, anyone can download the CAD file of the products, free of charge, and 3D print it. In my opinion, this is great design.

One of the most popular designs is “Mega Switch”. As its name indicates, it is an oversized switch that makes it possible to operate a lamp without the need for precise use of the fingers, something which people with cerebral palsy lack. This is a clear example of how a simple design can make a straightforward task, such as turning a lamp on, accessible to anyone.
